
Why do we use xanthan gum in our shakes?
Plant-based protein shakes are a healthy, sustainable, and effective alternative. But if you've tried more than one, you'll know that not all of them have a good texture .
In fact, many pea and rice protein shakes, when not containing any kind of thickener, have a sandy texture, which is not homogeneous and difficult to swallow. Some people are reminded of earth... so it is not a pleasant experience.

A simple (and natural) solution for a much better texture
At Tronk , we want a plant-based protein shake to be not just about nutrition, but also a pleasurable experience. The truth is, without a thickener that does its job properly, the result is often disappointing:

And a liquid that separates after a few minutes , with a thick layer below and water above
Therefore, after testing various options, we have chosen to add a minimal amount of xanthan gum to our shakes. That small amount is enough to make a dramatic improvement in the experience:

No lumps or residue in the mouth

That remains stable and well mixed throughout consumption
In short: xanthan gum allows us to ensure that the shake not only nourishes your body, but also tastes and drinks well.
What is xanthan gum? Is it safe?
Xanthan gum is a naturally sourced ingredient, obtained by fermentation of plant sugars (such as those from corn or sugar cane) through a bacterium called Xanthomonas campestris. It is a process similar to making bread or beer.
It is approved by all international food safety authorities , such as:

And it has been used for decades in food products, including infant and medical formulas.

Why don't we use other thickeners?
Because xanthan gum allows you to achieve an excellent texture using a very low amount , so low that:

It does not affect the percentage of protein (which is what you value most)

It does not provide calories, sugars or fats

It does not cause digestive discomfort in healthy people.
Using other natural thickeners would require adding more to achieve the same effect, which would negatively impact the shake's nutritional content and therefore your daily protein goals . And that would be perceived as a real problem for those of you who watch your diet.
Transparency in our ingredients
We do not use xanthan gum to hide anything. We use it because without it, the shake would not live up to what we want to offer: a natural, plant-based product with a good texture that you want to drink every day.
